Rashard Lewis has been hit with a 10-game suspension thanks to a failed drug test. This comes in the wake of the Magic’s furious off-season spending session, and the hopes that the Orlando Magic could repeat as Eastern Conference Champions. The oddsmakers certainly don’t peg them as long shots, but at +900 behind the Lakers, Cavs and Celtics, the Magic have a long way to go.
The worst part is that they cannot become their own enemy. Lewis was second in scoring with 17.7 points and second in rebounds with 5.7 boards per game. Hedo Turkoglu has since signed with the Raptors, but the Magic were quick to trade for Vince Carter who has always desired to be a second banana. He’ll get that wish, and must prove his worth in the first 10 games of the season now that Lewis is being forced to the bench by the league.
Teams in the Eastern Conference don’t bode well as losers in the NBA Finals. The Nets were able to post back-to-back losing attempts in the 2002 and 2003 Finals. The Pistons crumbled after losing to the Lakers in 2004 and have never been the same team since. Cleveland was run out of the building by the San Antonio Spurs in 2007 and have never been able to live up to all the LeBron hype.
So what’s in store for the Magic? I’ve said it time and again, but Vince Carter is not a savior. And we’ll get to see just how brutal he is with Dwight and Jameer in the first two weeks of the season with Rashard out. But this could be the first in a series of bad omens that are circling towards the Magic.
First they inexplicably matched Dallas’s offer for Marcin Gortat. They brought on a perennial whiny baby in Vince Carter. I mean, for goodness sakes, Patrick Ewing is a mentor on this team! Patrick Ewing! The guy who lost at every step of his career to the other real stars of his generation. Now they get this Rashard Lewis mess. If you wanted some signs not to bet on the Magic, then here they are. Hey, it’s hard not to be superstitious when they’re named the “Orlando Magic’. Hope they have a turn-around somewhere up their sleeves because 2009-10 is already off to a horrific start.
