Lewis said in a statement that he took an over-the-counter supplement late last season that included a substance he did not realize was banned by the NBA.
He will be suspended without pay for the first 10 regular-season games.
The Orlando Sentinel reported the supplement contained DHEA, a steroids precursor.
The 29-year-old Lewis averaged 19.0 points in the playoffs to help lead the Magic to the NBA finals.
Lewis is the sixth player to test positive for performance-enhancing drugs since the league began testing in 1999.
JUDGE ALLOWS BETTING TO BEGIN
A federal judge denied a request by professional sports leagues and the NCAA to halt Delaware’s planned sports betting lottery until a legal challenge is resolved. Chief District Judge Gregory Sleet set a Dec. 7 trial date on the plaintiffs’ claims that the sports betting plan violates a federal ban on sports gambling, as well as Delaware’s state constitution. The NCAA announced Thursday it won’t hold any championship tournaments in states that allow single-game sports betting.
RULING ALLOWS BOY TO SUE TEAM
The parents of a young boy struck in the head when a batter hit a ball into a picnic area before an Albuquerque Isotopes game can sue the minor league team and the city, an appellate court has ruled. The New Mexico Court of Appeals declined to adopt the so-called "baseball rule,” which immunizes stadium owners from liability as long as they have screens protecting the stands. Four-year-old Emilio Crespin was at a picnic table in the left field stands on July 21, 2003, when Dave Matranga of the New Orleans Zephyrs hit a batting practice home run that fractured the boy’s skull. The boy suffered permanent brain damage.
PITCHER WHO HIT FAN GETS JAIL
A minor league pitcher who threw a baseball that went into the stands and injured a fan during an on-field melee in Ohio last year has been sentenced to 30 days in jail. Julio Castillo, 22, was convicted of felonious assault. He was pitching for the Peoria Chiefs last year against the Dayton Dragons when a brawl erupted. Castillo threw a baseball into the stands during the brawl, hitting a fan. The fan suffered a concussion. LOWE’S OUT AS TRACK SPONSOR
Lowe’s will not renew its naming rights of Lowe’s Motor Speedway when its contract expires after this season, the company said. The home improvement chain signed as sponsor of then-Charlotte Motor Speedway in 1999 in the first major naming rights deal of a NASCAR track. Lowe’s will continue its primary sponsorship of three-time defending NASCAR champion Jimmie Johnson.
