A few quotes and other thoughts from today’s press conference to announce the re-signing of Glen Davis and signing of free agent Shelden Williams.
It was clear that Danny Ainge was confident all along that the C’s would retain Davis, as the unrestricted free agent system in the NBA gives the current team a huge advantage. Ainge compared the NBA’s system to baseball’s, where teams control the rights of their drafted players for the first six years of their career.
“Glen’s been with us for two years and as a restricted free agent we had a little more leverage than we certainly will at the end of this contract in two years where Glen will be an unrestricted free agent and only 25 years old and a great future still ahead of him. This was our time to get Glen at a fair price. I think that he wanted something a little bit bigger, and that’s what the hang-up has been over this time, but I think as the process has gone on, there are good things that happen as a result of it. And one of those things is that Glen understands that he’s loved by other teams out there too and we’re fortunate to have him on our team.”
Davis talked about the confidence he gained while playing well late last season:
“I already had confidence in myself, that I can play this game and I can play it at a high level. You gotta have a chip on your shoulder a little bit, you gotta have that attitude as far as to prove something to those out there. But everybody knows what I can do in this game and with the right mental approach I feel like I can still help and do a lot of things for the team.”
Davis talked about the comments a user named “bigbabybball” made on Twitter last week that expressed unhappiness with the free agency process. The Herald reported the comments last week, but Davis claimed an impostor was making the posts. Davis smiled and shook has head when asked about it yesterday, saying that he wished he knew who was posting the messages and said the person must be a “psychic” because the posts matched his thoughts.
Davis and Williams sitting next to each other today served as a reunion of a Sweet 16 matchup from the 2006 NCAA tournament. Williams got the better of the individual battle with 23 points and 13 rebounds to Davis’ 14 points and five boards, but Davis got the last laugh leading his LSU squad past Williams’ No. 1-seeded Duke team, 62-54. LSU reached the Final Four where it was bounced by UCLA.
