No deal in sight for top draft pick

WASHINGTON -- Nationals president Stan Kasten acknowledged Saturday there is a "very real possibility" the team will not reach an agreement with No. 1 overall draft pick Stephen Strasburg despite offering him a record-breaking contract.
The Nationals face a deadline of midnight Monday night to sign Strasburg, a right-hander from San Diego State whose fastball has been clocked at 102 m.p.h.

He is represented by Scott Boras, who has the top three players in this year's draft -- all of whom were unsigned as of Saturday afternoon.

Kasten said the Nationals offered Strasburg a major league contract worth more than the record $10.5 million pitcher Mark Prior got from the Chicago Cubs after being the second pick in the 2001 draft.

PHILADELPHIA: Right-hander Brett Myers reportedly has changed his description of how he sustained an injury that forced him to miss his first scheduled rehab start. The Phillies originally said Myers injured an eye while playing catch with his 4-year-old son. Later, Phillies spokesman Kevin Gregg said Myers told general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. he slipped while getting out of his truck Friday and hit his face. Myers, out since May 28 due to a torn labrum in his right hip, was scheduled to pitch one inning for Class A Clearwater.

SEATTLE: The Mariners have agreed to terms with first-round pick Nick Franklin, a high school shortstop, who was selected 27th overall.

TEXAS: The Rangers placed catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia on the 15-day disabled list with recurring numbness in his right hand.

TORONTO: The Blue Jays have signed first-round draft pick Chad Jenkins, a 21-year-old right-hander, taken 20th overall.
