According to the newest recruit, UM already has one. The Hurricanes landed a verbal commitment Monday night from Rion Brown, a 6-5 shooting guard out of Hinesville (Ga.) Liberty County High. Brown is rated the nation's 44th-best player by Rivals.com.
"I would say I'm a pure shooter," Brown said. "...I'm a taller, bigger version of Jack McClinton. He was a lights-out shooter."
Brown averaged 15 points a game as a junior, but began drawing more interest after a strong showing during the summer AAU circuit. He had narrowed his choices down to Alabama, Georgia and Virginia before choosing UM.
He said the biggest reason was Haith, and UM's recent string of having guards play in the NBA. McClinton was drafted in the second round by the San Antonio Spurs and Guillermo Diaz and Robert Hite also had stints with teams.
"I just looked at their guard play, and they have great guard coaches," Brown said. "I just know coach Haith can help me get to the next level. I mean, it's the ACC, which is one of the best college basketball conferences in the nation."
