The Dallas Mavericks signed free agent Drew Gooden, expecting him to back up Dirk Nowitzki at power forward and play alongside him at center . . . The Golden State Warriors acquired guard-forward Devean George and cash from the Toronto Raptors for guard Marco Belinelli. Former Boston College point guard Tyrese Rice, who led the Eagles in scoring (16.9 points per game) and assists (5.3), signed to play with Greek Panionios . . . Zubov, 39, leaving NHL for Russia
Free agent defenseman Sergei Zubov is heading home. The 39-year-old defenseman signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL after a 16-year NHL career, the last 12 seasons with the Dallas Stars, according to TSN.ca . . . Kyle Wellwood will return to Vancouver for a second year after the Canucks re-signed the center to a one-year, $1.2 million deal after arbitration . . . Phoenix Coyotes owner Jerry Moyes is challenging Jerry Reinsdorf’s attempt to buy the financially troubled team. Filed in bankruptcy court, the motion did not elaborate but says Moyes’s objection will be laid out in court documents today, the deadline for filing objections to Reinsdorf’s bid . . . Arturo Gatti’s death was ruled a suicide by authorities in Brazil and a judge ordered the release of his wife, Amanda Rodrigues, who was suspected of strangling the former champion while he was passed out drunk . . .
