I'll spare you Shaq's attacks on Kurt Rambis and Mychal Thompson because they're just not that interesting. But in the same interview with ESPN Radio, the Big Bringer of Pain offered some insight into the Rashard Lewis situation. Transcription courtesy of Sports Radio Interviews:
Rashard Lewis was suspended for taking testosterone, do you think a lot of NBA players are taking performance enhancing steroids?

“I don’t think, I’m gonna go with no. However, I can say, a lot of guys including myself, we do go in to these GNC stores and for example, we look at a bottle and it says, ‘Fan Man Buster Plus’ and it has a nice little picture on the thing, we’ll buy it without even doing the research or looking at it. But, I think now guys really have to look and see what’s on the back so we’re not taking anything. But, again, most people when they read the labels they just buy it, ‘Fat Booty Buster Plus - lose your fat booty in 10 days.’ But, I don’t think the guy was like, ‘Let me use a steroid.’ I’ve known Rashard a long time and he’s not that type of guy.”
I know that players lie all the time and would never come out and say "we love to juice!" But my point all along has been this: PED scourges don't happen because a single athlete wants an edge, but because there's an entire infrastructure in place that makes these drugs easily accessible to them, or makes using them seem less totally weird and questionable. While no one asked Shaq to provide an ethnography of the NBA gym scene, if this is the way he and other players view supplements and the such, we're miles from the bio-engineeering of baseball.

Shaq makes it sound like NBA players basically shop for supplements based on the picture on the label. Maybe this is all a very clever smokescreen. But anecdotally, this only strengthens my belief that basketball just hasn't gotten around to discovering PEDs yet.
