Sports in Brief: Multiyear deal keeps Odom with the Lakers

Lamar Odom yesterday agreed on a multiyear contract to stay with the Los Angeles Lakers, keeping intact most of the roster that won the team's 15th NBA title this year.
Lakers spokesman John Black confirmed an agreement, but would not discuss it. The contract is expected to contain three guaranteed years and a fourth-year option.

Jayson Williams' assault case in Raleigh, N.C., was continued until Aug. 27. Williams, who played for the New Jersey Nets and the 76ers before retiring in 2000, was charged with simple assault in May after authorities said he punched someone in the face at a nightclub.
Elsewhere: The Indiana Pacers signed free-agent forward Solomon Jones to a multiyear contract. . . . The Golden State Warriors acquired guard-forward Devean George and cash from the Toronto Raptors for guard Marco Belinelli. . . . The Raptors also signed free-agent center Rasho Nesterovic, who spent last season in Indiana. . . . The Dallas Mavericks signed Drew Gooden to back up Dirk Nowitzki at power forward. . . . The Chicago Bulls waived forward Linton Johnson III and guard DeMarcus Nelson.

Tennis

Wimbledon champion Serena Williams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Premier Bank of the West Classic, beating Hungary's Melinda Czink, 6-3, 7-6 (7), in Stanford, Calif. Williams, seeded first and ranked No. 2, plays Austria's Samantha Stosur today.

Colleges

A prosecutor dropped a felony charge against Florida State receiver Richard Goodman, who was accused of hurling a chair at a woman during a brawl in the school's student union. Elsewhere: Hawaii coach Greg McMackin apologized for using a derogatory remark while describing Notre Dame's chant during a dinner banquet leading up to last year's Hawaii Bowl.

Swimming

Even with Michael Phelps sitting in the stands, seven more world records fell in the World Swimming Championships in Rome - 29 over five days at the Foro Italico - and there are three days to go. American Ryan Lochte touched in 1 minute, 54.10 seconds in the 200-meter individual medley, to break Phelps' gold-medal time of 1:54.23 from Beijing.

Russia's Kontinental Hockey League completed a contract with Detroit Red Wings forward Jiri Hudler. The KHL registered Hudler's two-year, $10 million contract in Moscow.
Backtalk prevailed by a neck over Enumerate and Louisvilleluminary at the end of a four-horse stretch battle to win the 95th running of the $150,000 Sanford Stakes for 2-year-olds at Saratoga Race Course.
Backtalk, a son of Smarty Jones, overtook Enumerate in the final strides of a 6-furlong run in 1:10.07.
